Looking beyond grievances towards resolution

Acas's report on the extent and impact of conflict at work is startling.  It includes the fact that 9.7 million employees experienced conflict in 2018/2019.  Moreover, the annual costs to employers identified in the report include:

  • £11.9 billion from resignations
  • £10.5 billion from disciplinary dismissals
  • £2.2 billion from sickness absences

What is increasingly clear is that the grievance and disciplinary process in itself is not enough to address this reality.  Rather, organisations need to be more creative in introducing Resolution Schemes and Frameworks that sit alongside their processes but counteract their potentially negative impact.

Organisations need to place much greater emphasis on repairing employment relationships in the event of conflict and taking action at early points to address issues of capability and poor performance.
