James Smith's joint enterprise based convictions referred by CCRC

James Alexander Smith and his co-accused Peter Greer were convicted at Downpatrick Crown Court in March 2013 of murder and attempted murder, and two counts of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. Mr Smith was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 21 years.

Paul Taylor QC was instructed post conviction by Michael Madden of Madden & Finucane Solicitors to advise Mr. Smith, and submissions were lodged with the CCRC in 2020. Today his convictions were referred back to the Northern Ireland Court of Appeal by the CCRC.

This was the first time in Northern Ireland that the CCRC has referred a joint enterprise case as a possible miscarriage of justice.
