Ofsted has (28th June) published its annual report on the state of children's social care in England. It is not entirely promising, with a quarter of local authorities judged inadequate. It states: "the children who come to the attention of social care are the most vulnerable in our society. They deserve the highest standards, and yet there is still too much provision that is inadequate." One area of particular concern, no doubt unsurprisingly for those who practise in this area, is that of care leavers:

Work with care leavers demands more focus and improvement. The evidence suggests that local authorities are not always sticking with care leavers for long enough to ensure that they find their place in the world. The support for them is too variable. Often, it lacks a tenacious, ambitious approach to support them to grow up, leave home, and find rewarding work and further education.
